The Super Alliance: An Origin Story

The Super Alliance is a sci-fi web-series I created, first aired in the summer of 2013. It follows TV show host John Jupiter when he is invited to join a strange team called the Super Alliance after discovering he has superpowers.

Our story begins in the spring of 2011; I was in my 3rd year of the film program at Emily Carr University and our teacher had asked us to write and shoot a short film as our term project. I’m not sure exactly where the inspiration came from, but I wrote a script about a guy discovering he has superpowers, trying to tell his girlfriend but getting dumped instead. I called it The Super Society. For this project I had to wear the producer’s hat (vowing to never do it again. But how wrong was I!) and I put together a cast and a small crew (myself and 2 friends). Earlier that year, I had decided to graduate a year late and spread my 3rd year over two years instead, which led to me meeting my future co-producers Anaïsa Visser and Amber Davy.

In the summer of 2012 I was preparing to shoot my grad film, with my friend Ron as the producer. I had mentioned to him that I wanted to turn The Super Society into a web-series after graduating and I basically became obsessed (it was a good distraction from the heartbreak I was going through at the time). At the end of the fall semester I had to do a presentation in my professional practices class and my topic of choice: Web-Series. I talked about the different web-series out there and basically pitched my show. At that point Anaïsa, my best friend, raised her hand and said “I’ll produce”.

Christmas came and Anaïsa, Amber and Ron were officially on board to produce (and write and direct). We started meeting and conceptualizing the style and brand of the show we wanted to make (the original script for the first episode was very different). After a few meetings Ron decided to move on to other projects  and we changed the name of the show to The Super Alliance.

We went through rewrites, casting (stories for a different time) and then, in a blink of an eye, it was April and time to shoot. We spent two days filming the first episode (plus a reshoot) and four months later the first episode was online.
